FAQ

Q

What is the best resolution for my scans?

A

On the Arriscan, most clients choose 4K (4096x3112) for 35mm and 3.2K (3168 x 2160) for 16mm. We can scan 35mm and 16mm at any resolution up to 6.5K

Q

What file format is best for my needs?

A

We can supply any format that you require. Most commercials or short films tend to use ProRes444XQ or AVID formats.

Q

How big will my files be?

A

This depends on the resolution and file formats selected. A 3.2K scan in ProRes444XQ is approximately 100GB for 10mins of film.

Q

Can you scan damaged film?

A

We can scan damaged film, and can also repair your film if required. We have the sprocket less option for our Arriscan XT that will allow quite severely damaged film to be scanned.

Q

Should my film be cleaned?

Q

What is vinegar syndrome?

A

We clean all films unless you specifically want them left as-is. We have a SanLabs cleaner and a Lipsner Smith cleaner. Cleaning your films is completely safe and results in a much better quality scan.

A

If your film gives off a vinegar odour, then the film is degrading, and will eventually disintegrate. We can scan film with ‘vinegar syndrome’ , it requires special handling and please be careful if handling the film yourself. Wear a VOC respirator and handle it in a well ventilated space.
